Starts: Friday, July 12, 2024

Event Description:

Attend a birthday party in honor of Edith Renfrow Smith’s 110th birthday! On Friday, July 12, come to Stewart Gallery in the Grinnell Arts Center from 4:00 - 6:00 pm to sign a card or record a video greeting for her! Enjoy birthday cupcakes and refreshments and view the new exhibit displaying historic photographs of the town of Grinnell, Renfrow Smith’s family and the Stewart building (now known as the Grinnell Arts Center). The exhibit is a collaboration between Drake Community Library’s Poweshiek History Preservation Project and the Grinnell Area Arts Council, supported by the Friends of DCL and Grinnell College.

The photos explore life in Grinnell from 1890–1950, the era that Renfrow Smith, the first African-American woman to graduate from Grinnell College in 1937, and her family lived in Grinnell. Visitors are invited to connect with how Grinnellians lived in the early 20th century and reflect on the town’s evolution.

Regular Stewart Gallery hours are 11:00 am - 5:00 pm, Tuesdays through Fridays, and 10:00 am - 12:00 pm, Saturdays. Admission to Stewart Gallery is free.
