Event Details:
Event Description:Drake Community Library has received funding from Humanities Iowa, a private, non-profit, to host "Iowans You Should Know: Stories from the Iowa Almanac" with Jeff Stein, the producer and host of the syndicated radio program "Iowa Almanac" on Thursday, November 7 at 10:00 a.m. The program will be held in the Community Room at Drake Community Library, 930 Park Street, Grinnell. A cultural resource for Iowans since 1971, Humanities Iowa offers many cultural and historical programs and grants to Iowa's communities. This event is free and open to the public.
Stein will share fascinating stories from the "Iowa Almanac," a daily radio program that airs across Iowa 50 times each weekday. The program, now in its tenth year, highlights events in Iowa history that took place on each date, with more than 400 unique stories shared over the years.
"Iowa is a special place with so much to celebrate," Stein said. "These in-person presentations give me the chance to tell more of the story than time permits on the radio."
The program covers a wide range of topics that showcase Iowa’s rich history, including famous Iowa-based inventions such as the Eskimo Pie and the clip-on bow tie, notable political leaders, sports heroes, and top-charting musicians. Attendees can expect to enjoy nostalgic moments and gain a deeper appreciation for the unique contributions of Iowans throughout history. Stein also tailors his presentations to include stories of particular regional interest, making each event special and locally relevant.
Stein, a Toledo native, has previously delivered popular presentations at Drake Community Library, including sessions on broadcasting history. He encourages audience participation and welcomes attendees to suggest stories of their own for potential future segments of "Iowa Almanac."
Don’t miss this unique opportunity to experience Iowa’s history in an interactive and entertaining way. Mark your calendars for Thursday, November 7 at 10:00 a.m. at Drake Community Library.
